Delta Fares

Delta giving 20,000 miles for applying for their credit card?

So apparently if I apply for the delta gold credit card and make a purchase with it, Delta will award me with 20,000 sky miles. The first year's annual fee is waived/ So I was wondering, is it possible to apply for the card, make a purchase, receive the 20,000 miles on my skymiles account and then cancel the card within a year and still retain the miles?

  1. Yes, but be aware, most flights cost at least 25,000 miles, but usually more than that at even 35,000 miles. So to do that, you'd have to spend a lot more than you'd really want to to get the free flight. Oh, and all trips have to be round trip... you can't book a one way to spend less miles.
  2. Yes, you can, but it's hardly worth it. When I was flying regularly and built up a lot of miles with Delta I tried to use their ff miles and their program is so restrictive it's not even remotely practical to use it. There are so few flights that you can use miles on, etc. that it's just not worth it. And now, since I haven't used the miles, they've expired. So much for that strategy.
  3. I don't think so, cancel the card, you'll loose the air miles.
