Delta Fares

Do I have to collect my luggage on a connecting flight?

I am flying with Delta from London changing at Atlanta onto another Delta flight to Orlando and am unsure if I have to collect my luggage and check in again.

  1. Most likely not if you'll be with Delta the whole time, sometimes you do if you switch airlines.
  2. No they wil make sure it gets moved to the right plane for you as long as it's tagged properly. You just have to take your carry-on luggage with you.
  3. If orlando is custom international airport, then it is not required. Tell airlines staff to book your luggage upto Orlando, airlines will tranfer your baggage from Atlanta to Orlando themselves.
  4. Yes In the old days your luggage would have been security checked in London and tagged through to Orlando. You would not have access to it on arrival in Atlanta. Due to enhanced security measures since 11/9 this is no longer the case. You will have to clear immigration in Atlanta, collect your baggage and carry it to the desk for your continuation flight. I would ensure at least 3 hours between flights as there can be long queues at immigration. Ian M
  5. Not if you booked it all the way through to your final destination at the first airline.
  6. No you will not need to get your luggage the airlines will handle the transfer of you checked luggage from one aircraft to the next.
  7. DO NOT DO THIS! Otherwise the airlines is not responsible for it reaching your final destination on time. Since it is Delta all the way, they will check it through to you. To be sure and rest easy, ask at the check in desk if your luggage will be checked through.
  8. Yes and no. Your bags will be tagged all the way through to Orlando but yes, you do have to collect them in Atlanta, only to go through Customs. Once you get through those procedures, look for signs saying "Connecting Flights". You will then hand your bags back over to Delta, where they'll be transferred to your Orlando flight. There will be more information given to you on the day and it will be clearer what to do when you're there. There will be plenty of people doing the same thing so you can just follow the crowd, at least the ones with obvious connections (don't follow the ones with loved ones throwing themselves at them ;) It sounds muddled when explained but it's really not that complicated. Have a good trip!
