Delta Fares

What is the process to get my checked luggage from one carrier to another when I have a layover?

I'm flying into La Guardia tomorrow on American and then I have to transfer to Delta. I'm planning on carrying on my luggage, but since I'm group 4 to board I'm afraid there won't be room in the overhead compartment. Is there anything specific I need to do to make sure my luggage makes it on the Delta flight if they force me to check it?

  1. They should do it automatically for you. There is never a way to make sure 100% that it will not get lost. Hopefully they'll let you carry it on!
  2. If it does not fit on the Delta flight, they will take it and put it down below right there and mark it as a gate check-in. FI you had to check it on the American flight, you would have to gfo out to baggage claim, pull it off, and then rechck it with delta.
  3. Most airlines have interairlines-contract about luggage transferring from points to points. At the first check-in counter, you should let them know that you have another tickets and show them the actual destination of your trip. By looking at your luggages they can tell you immediately if you can take them on the plane or have to check them in. Sometimes, they will let you take them as carry-on but they will tag them to the final destination just in-case the aircarft is full, when they put them in hold for a while. Your belongings will be OK. Good luck!
