Flight from SFO to FCO, stops at JFK, should I check into Delta's international or domestic departure?

I am leaving for ROME next week, just wondering where should I check in, international or domestic. Seems to me the first segment of the flight leaves at Gate G40 which is a domestic gate. But my final destination is Italy.

2. As your first leg is domestic you have to proceed to domestic departures which means domestic check-in. 'Domestic Check-In' is, however, somewhat misleading, as they will be able to check you in directly to Italy.
