Delta Fares

why an infant should pay so much a flight with no seat?

Hi everyone, I recently purchased two tickets from New York(JFK) to Venice(Italy).. I paid around $1500 for me and my wife together .. I called Delta to add my daughter(one year old) on the tickets.. The first time they told me I won't receive a paper ticket at home anymore and I should pay the fare for my daughter at the check in... Suspicious of all this I called again and they told me the fare changes every minute and to stop it I should pay it now with them... She is 1 year old, she will be sitting on our lap and we need to pay $480???I paid for my seat $700 WTF!!!! any suggestion?

  1. Hello It's generally half-fare for infants/children when going overseas and with the way fares fluctuate It sounds about right.. Some Airlines have lap and seat prices for 0-1 yr olds, so make sure you let them know the baby will not be using a seat.. I think going through Orbitz,Travelocity or Expedia way in advance would have gotten you better fares all around. Edit: I actually just looked up the prices through Orbitz and Expedia using a date a month ahead and it works out to about the same you are paying.
  2. See the following Delta website: http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/special_travel_needs/services_for_children/child_fares/index.jsp For domestic flights, a child under 2 can fly on your lap for free, but for international flights you have to buy a seat for them. At least they offer discounted children's seats for international flights instead of full fare. Beyond that, I'd say you should definitely buy her ticket now and not at the airport. Maybe they meant you would have to pick up the ticket at the airport?
  3. I have been arguing with my co-workers over this one, so your post made me do some research: International Travel - Not Occupying A Seat Currently all infant tickets (whether free or percentage based infant fare tickets) are required to be paper tickets. This, in turn, requires that the accompanying adult ticket also be paper so that both tickets can be attached to each other. This process is to prevent the situation of "missed infants" flying on Delta. Note: Regardless of infant fare type, all applicable taxes and surcharges must be collected. Click here for more information on international lap held infant. The following chart identifies if a ticket is required for an infant not occupying a seat on international flights: Area Infant Ticket Required?
