Is it time to rethink "security" rules at airports?

A woman arrived late for her flight and was not allowed to board the plane. She became irate and was handcuffed and put into a holding cell, where she was left until she quieted. They went in and found her dead; somehow the handcuffs had become wrapped around her neck. At some point, her flight was rebooked. Five years ago, my granddaughter booked a flight for herself and me to Oklahoma City. Since she wasn't sure if I would be the one going with her or her mother, she booked the flight in her mother's name. On the day of the flight was the first I heard that the flight (which was paid for by me) was not in my name. I had to take a later flight and pay yet another fare. Delta would not do anything about reimbursement, even though I had paid for three flights and one went empty, through no fault of mine. I can understand this woman getting irate, even though it was a different airport and a different airline. Andy S -- the report I read simply said she arrived late.

1. Considering that "security" is an illusion, yes.
2. This was a tragic story, I just read it this morning. I do think the security procedures need a big overhaul. I'm sick of watching TSA staff shake down ninety year old ladies with pacemakers- it's no wonder passengers are becoming increasingly hostile to airline employees. Was this lady late to the gate because of security?
3. While I agree with you in part, I also feel we need security at airports. Some of the rules are a bit over board but better that then too lacks.
4. I agree. the last time I flew was in January. Security held me for over 2 hours because my drivers license had expired and I had tooth paste in my purse. I had plenty of picture Id's with me, but they would not accept them. I almost missed the flight and I was at the airport 2 1/2 hours early!
5. Security at the airports is to keep you safe from all the crazies. There are loads of them out there. The woman that died, God rest her soul, was hopefully an accident. We don't know exactly what was going on. As for your dispute with Delta Airlines, that is/was/are their rules.
6. The lady who died after being arrested at Sky Harbor airport had nothing to do with increased security at airports after the attack on America. She had already gone through the TSA checkpoints. She was prevented from entering the jetway onto the flight because the door to the jetway had already been closed. As for the security issue, I have no problem with that. In 1968 I boarded an ANA flight at Fukuoka Japan for Seoul Korea. I wound up in Pyongyang North Korea thanks to the seven members of the "Seki-gun-ha" (Red Army) terrorist faction on board the aircraft. Personally, I'm getting a little tired of some passengers treating air travel like boarding a Greyhound bus. It's not.
