Delta Fares

what are last-minute tickets & one-way walk-up fares?

Most of the nation's largest airlines said yesterday that they would raise prices for many last-minute tickets. Yesterday, American Airlines, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines and US Airways followed the move by Delta Air Lines to increase one-way walk-up fares by $50. On the above passage, what are last-minute tickets & one-way walk-up fares?

  1. Depends on the airline, point of departure, the destination and the time and date of the flight.
  2. On the above passage, what are last-minute tickets & one-way walk-up fares? Last-minute tickets are tickets that are not purchased in advance, booked through agencies or bought online long before the flight. The definition of 'last-minute' would be at the whim of the airlines but let's say you get a wild urge to go somewhere...NOW. You walk into the airport and buy a ticket...that would be a 'last-minute' ticket. Doing something in the 'last minute' is an English idiom meaning at the last possible moment before (something happens)...in this case last minute before the plane leaves. If you walked up to the counter and asked for a ticket to Las Vegas with no return trip scheduled, it would be one-way...only going there, not back. One-way and round trip are the two designations of flights, one going only to the destination, the other being to the destination and back. Since you walked up to the counter, it's a walk-up ticket...so a one-way walk-up ticket. Money paid for transportation is a fare...so it's a one-way (not round trip) walk-up (to the counter) fare (ticket to ride).
