What led to the Demise of Song , Delta airlines lower fare carrier?
I never really understood what happend to them. Song was easily one of my favorite airlines with the person tv's at every seat, along with vast array of music selections and trivia you played against everyone else on your flight. (Not to mention cheap fares) I do realize that these planes have been converted into Delta's fleet, but I rarely seem to end up on one of them. Did anyone else ever Fly Song before they went under, and enjoyed them as much as I did? Also, of the 8 or 10 times I flew them, there was never a single seat unoccupied. Thats why I was shocked that they terminated. ** I was even on a red eye flight from LAX to Fort Lauderdale, and that flight was completely full**

- There can be many reasons why Song was terminated. It is possibly Delta felt Song was not making enough profit for them. Song did charge lower airfare and when the price of oil spiked, then Delta probably thought it would be better to re-integrate the Song aircraft back to the mainline fleet. I hear United is getting rid of Ted. Lots of these airlines within an airline do not work. United tried the Shuttle by United where they operated a lot of 737 aircraft throughout the west coast. Shuttle by United did not last very long. As for the airplane being full, when the price of oil was really high, airlines were still losing money on each flight because the ticket prices did not cover the expense of fuel, employee salaries, airport landing fees, etc. So it is possible that an airline flight can be full and the airline make little or no profit. Also remember that Song flew to mostly vacation spots or where leisure travelers go to. Leisure travelers are more price sensitive than business travelers. If the ticket price is too high, then leisure travelers will change their plans. Therefore leisure city fares are typically lower than fares to cities where business travelers go to.
- I hope this helps. With Delta in Chapter 11 they were trying to cut cost. On October 28, 2005, Delta announced plans to incorporate Song's aircraft into Delta's mainline domestic long haul operation beginning in May 2006. Eventually the 48 Boeing 757-200 airplanes were converted to include 26 first class seats and repainted with Delta colors. The eradication of the airline was seen by aviation analysts as a move to reduce costs and emerge from bankruptcy.
- Song was a great airline, I agree with you! I miss them, too! Song was developed by Delta initially as a low cost carrier to compete mainly in the domestic & transcontinental Northeast sector. However, with time, Delta decided to focus on what it was best at...flying around the world. Delta has found a niche in the airline world--it is the leading international airline in the US. So this is the reason Song was stopped...to focus on what Delta is now...the number one US international airline. Delta goes to unique places direct from the US no other US airline does...to cities like Kiev, Nice, Capetown, Malaga, Amman, Prague, Cairo, Georgetown, Lagos, Dubai, Istanbul, Lyon,--just to name a few! Song is missed, but the new Delta is worth it!
