Delta Fares

I want to pledge Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. this fall. Questions and concerns.

In a week I will be a senior, I have wanted to pledge Delta Sigma Theta for years and I believe my chance to pledge is coming soon. I have over a year of committed community service, a 3.3 gpa and close relationships with a few Delta's on campus. My only concern is having someone to write my recommendation letter. Someone that I know has offered to write my letter when the time comes. I would like to know if she is financial but I feel like it might be rude to ask. How do I go about doing this? Also, am I on the right track for membership and is there anything else that I should know or do? I haven't expressed my interest in Delta with my friends who are members because I don't want them or anyone else to think that I'm friends with them because of who they are.

  1. Congrats on the positive efforts that you have made so far. I am not a member of Delta Sigma Theta but through research that I have found, I believe that if you are very close to members of Delta Sigma Theta you shouldn't have a problem asking them for a rec. letter. That is if you feel comfortable asking them. If a member of DST is willing to write you a rec letter they should be aware that they have to be financially active in order to write one for you. But like I said earlier if you are close with a member (ie they will leave you alone in there house with their children) then there shouldn't be a problem. Continue to do community service, participate in school organizations, and continue to keep that gpa up there. It is a good thing that you are being discreet.. but if those friends of yours go to you school you should let one of them know in a respectful manner. Keep your eyes open for interest meetings and such. Remember respect is key. Much success to you!
  2. I completely understand your feelings at this time. I, myself, pledge my last semester of school too. I was pinned on the 13th of Dec. and graduated on the 18th!!! I was told by so many that I would not be allowed pledge due to being a senior. That is false; it depends on your school and their bylaws. As far as asking the Delta if she is financial, do it! You can be creative by saying, "I know I have to ask a financial Delta to write my letter... would you be capable of doing so?" I had two line sisters who had a non-financial Delta write their letters. Luckily for them, this was before the rule that the financial Delta had to be financial for a year prior to her writing the letter. This is something that you are going to have to be aware of. If she has not been financial for a while she (the delta) might not know that she can no longer pay her dues at the time she summits her letter. They not only have to be financial but must be financial for one year prior to writing YOUR letter.
