Why did Northwest and Delta become one airline?

I always used to fly on NWA and I learned a while ago that NWA and Delta were joining together,and I never knew why? I just want to know what made them combine? Was it prices in the hard times? I really miss NWA!

1. Global US carrier that can compete with foreign airlines - NWA is strong in asian markets while Delta is strong in much of the rest of the world - Europe, Carribean, Latin America, Africa, etc.... More financially stable airline - especially long term Offset fuel costs and to become a more efficient airline
2. Northwest was losing money and was operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a few years ago. In order to save money, it merged with Delta, and it has been consolidating gates, ticket counters, hubs etc.
