Should I join a sorority? Which one?
I'm a new student at Chapman University and I was thinking about joining a sorority, but I wasn't sure. I do know it is a good way to meet people. Another reservation I have is how time consuming it is, because I'm a music major and that takes up a lot of my time. If I did decide to join which one should I choose? I was wondering if there was a stereo type behind each one. For example, I've heard Alpha Phi's are All-for-free's. There's Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Kappa Alpha Theta.

- Is Chapman any good? Please let me know. I've been hearing how good their game design department is but I'm not sure. Maybe they don't even have a department. btw, I've never heard of ANY of these so-called sororities. That's not saying anything about them except I'm not familiar with those.
- Those are all national Panhellenic sororities, and they vary from school to school, so no one can tell you which is best. Yes, there are stereotypes for each one, but they vary by school. My chapter was completely different than the same sorority a half hour away. Watch out for stereotypes. Most people, especially non-Greeks, base their opinion on a sorority just from one interaction with one member. Also, reputations can be straight out false or outdated. Things change as members graduate and new ones join. The girls just aren't same year to year. Also, some sororities just have names that are easy to make stupid nicknames from. Like Delta Zeta. Easy DZ is a super easy nickname to come up with, and they say it at pretty much every school, no matter if they actually are easy or not! And dumb immature guys get a kick out of crap like that. You choose one by meeting them all and seeing where you feel comfortable. See where you feel at home. You'll know when it feels right and when it doesn't. The time commitment depends on how much you want to be involved. At minimum, there's a chapter meeting every week or every 2 weeks, and other mandatory events like recruitment and initiations. You get advance notice though, and can be excused for things if you have a good excuse. You can be more involved though, by taking positions and going to optional events like sisterhoods and socials. Those will definitely take up more time, but they are optional. It's definitely possible to manage your time and do everything you want. Just keep your priorities straight and stay focused on what's important. Have fun and good luck! It will all work out!
