(Ethanol can be made from the fermentation)Balanced equation for the combustion of ethanol. Calculate Delta H?
Ethanol can be made from the fermentation of crops and has been used as a fuel additive to gasoline. a) Write a balanced equation for the combustion of ethanol. Express your answer as a chemical equation. Identify all of the phases in your answer. (the answer is NOT C2H6O+ 3O2 →3H2O+2CO2) which is what I first throught. b) Calculate Delta Δ Hrx

- a) The equation you have IS correct, it just doesnt have the phase labels attached. C2H6O(l) + 3O2(g) → 3H2O(l) + 2CO2(g) b) You need the heats of formation (dHf) for H2O(l), CO2(g), and (C2H6O(l). These can be found in a table. dH rx = (3 moles H2O(l))(dHf H2O(l)) + (2 moles CO2(g))(dHf CO2(g)) - (1 mole C2H6O)(dHf C2H6O(l))
