Delta Fares

I have booked flights with delta airlines to the USA, weight allowances? Whos right?

I booked with Delta Airlines to go to America in June. I specifically asked what their baggage policy was- was i allowed one or two bags. The assurred me i was allowed two suitcases per passenger. However, i went onto their website just there and it said "as of May 5th we will only be accepting one bag per passenger". I called them up, and they denied ever saying that I could carry two bags- and i cant prove it. Who is right? What can i do?

  1. I don't think you can do anything if you have no proof. Also it probably says somewhere in your terms and conditions that they change change allownaces once they give sufficent notice on their website.
  2. I would go by what's in writing on the website. Pack lightly.
  3. Rules are subject to change, just like airfares. Are you sure they are limiting your checked baggage allowance? or are they simply charging you for the second bag? Basically, if you can't prove it...why bother?
  4. When did they say this? The change in number of bags allowed is a very recent change. You can still take the 2nd bag, but it'll cost you (I think $25, but I'm not sure). There's really nothing you can do.
  5. Yes, they have just CHANGED their policy...nothing can be done about that. The website does say ONE FREE checked bag...that indicates you can bring a 2nd bag for a fee. Unfortunately site does not specify what that fee is, so you would have to call them.
  6. Check you're etkt. Whatever is specified on your ticket is in fact your baggage allowance. Airlines are allowed to change baggage allowances whenever they like HOWEVER these changes are only applicable to tickets purchased after the change was made. If a ticket was purchased prior to these changes then you are legally entitled to the baggage allowance previously advised. If your ticket says 2pc then you're entitled to two pieces. This is in accordance with IATA, the montreal and warsaw conventions with relation to air travel. Many airline staff will insist this is not the case however, having worked for an airline ticket desk for many years i can assure you this is infact the case, and also advise you the reason that airline staff will isist this is different is for one of two reasons, the first being that they are trying to increase revenue for the airline hoping their airshare (bonus) will be higher, and also many airline staff are seriously lacking in training (through no fault of their own i might add) If you research both the Montreal and Warsaw convention on google you can read this info for yourself http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=306&pagetype=90&pageid=5298 alternativly go to http://www.iata.org go to the search engine and type baggage allowance, you can then download the policies and procedures all airlinse must adhere to. hope this helps
  7. Your question says that you are "traveling to America" which suggests that you are on an international flight. If so, you are correct. You are allowed to have two checked bags at no extra charge as long as they are within Delta's size and weight restrictions. Delta's website clearly states that the new policy applies to passengers "traveling in the U. S., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico." It also says that "....the $25 bag fee for the second checked piece of luggage will not apply to international flights." You can read it here: http://www.delta.com/help/faqs/baggage/index.jsp
