Do you believe that some Delta flights are being canceled to check the wiring today or is it something else?
Delta has cancelled many flights today and I think it was American that cancelled the other day to check wiring? Do you believe this is the reason or its something else we are not being told?

- Yes, it's the safety inspections: http://www.cnn.com/2008/TRAVEL/03/27/airline.cancellations/?iref=mpstoryview
- Yes, I believe that is the reason, no reason not to.
- Yeah, I believe it. They don't want the public relations fiasco recently endured by Southwest.
- Delta is voluntarily revalidating an Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. We had completed the original AD earlier in the year, but are proactively re-inspecting all the McDonnell Douglas-88 aircraft in the fleet. According to media reports, the need for the new inspections became known during an audit of American Airlines by a joint team of inspectors from the FAA and AA. In a statement issued today, we confirmed that because safety is Delta's No. 1 priority, we take the FAA’s requirement very seriously. We said the review of 117 MD-88 aircraft will have an impact on the operation, and we expect approximately 275 flights to be canceled as a result of the review. We apologized in advance for any inconvenience to our customers and said we would work to minimize the effect on passengers and proactively contact and reaccomodate any affected customers. The majority of affected passengers already have been booked on other flights. “Throughout the day Wednesday we monitored the situation with American Airlines and determined that, because we also operate a large number of MD-88 aircraft, it would be prudent to conduct the same revalidation of the AD," said Steve Gorman, e.v.p.-Operations. “All affected areas of the company worked together, staying late into the night and coming in on their day off, all to help minimize the impact on our customers.”
- I personally believe that they're being truthful. After all, the media has talked about this topic quite a bit and if there were something conspicuous about it, you'd better believe they'd have outed it by now. I have no problem with these inspections; I just wish they'd have given travellers some warning before they just suddenly cancelled flights.
